If your couch recliner does not open or close when you click the button, you may need to use some of your own strength to move it. By forcing it to move, you may be able to lessen the stiffness and get it to operate again when you press the buttons again. Start by standing up and pushing on the armrest of the chair to lift it a few inches off the floor. You should be able to easily move it this far. Once it's off the floor, try to pull it toward you until you can grab the foot rest or back rest of the chair. Grasp the handle or lever that controls movement if there is one, and give it a sharp tug in your desired direction.
If this doesn't work, try pulling on the legs of the chair instead. The legs are probably stiff too, so this might be easier. Try to pull them toward you until you can grab the feet of the chair. You could also try lifting one of the wheels on the bottom of the chair. This might allow you to slide the chair away from you, giving you more room to work with.
The last option you have is to call for help. Any family member or friend could come over and try to push or pull the recliner to see if it moves any further. If they cannot do it, ask them to call you a tow truck or emergency repair person.
When you push the control button or pull the release lever and nothing occurs, it might be disheartening. So, what are you going to do now? Manual action recliners for chairs are quite robust and durable, and they will endure a long time, although they do occasionally break down. However, because they are made of metal, they can also be rather expensive to repair. The best option is probably to replace it instead.
The majority of commercial office chairs have one of two types of mechanisms used to control the recline angle: a gas cylinder or a spring. A few models still use a ball-and-socket joint for this purpose. All of these mechanisms require maintenance in order to function properly. If you ignore them, your recliner will not recline all the way down or won't rewind back up again. This is not only uncomfortable but could be dangerous if you're left lying in it with no way to get out.
A recliner that doesn't work is worse than no recliner at all. It's important to take care of your furniture, especially if it's been sitting in one place for a long time. Use a soft brush to clean the mechanism inside and out. If there are stains on the fabric, use a gentle cleaner. You may need to wash the cover too if it gets dirty. Be sure to dry each part thoroughly before putting it back together. If any parts feel warm, there's still likely something wrong with them.
If your recliner has stopped operating when it is open, it might be due to an issue with the electrical components. Check to make sure it's still plugged in. If it is, the chair may have a bad connection. Check that all of the cables are still connected, and reconnect any that are loose. Try pushing on each side of the chair to make sure it isn't stuck.
If the problem persists, call an electrician to repair the circuit board. The parts are expensive, so this should be done by someone who knows how to do it safely. Before you have any work done on your recliner, give us a call so we can make sure it's safe for you to use other than what we will be repairing.
